In my opinion, this is a keeper. I would recommend this one if they continue with the same venue. Olathe Marathon was held in conjunction with the NAIA College Championships. It was great talking to several college kids from around the country regarding track and field.

The collegiate marathon started a half hour before the citizen marathon. They started at 6:30 a.m. and we lined up at 7 a.m. The course was touted as relatively flat with some rolling hills. There were a few hills that folks definitely complained about. I heard several state, "I thought Kansas was supposed to be flat?" Some of the hills were the quarter-mile to half-mile variety with a steady ascent. All in all, though, not a bad course.

Weather was decent. Start time was overcast with a few sprinkles and 55 degrees. The rain never got organized, which left the air heavy with humidity.

My goal? Wanted to break 3:30 to BQ once again. Wasn't to be today, however.

Some sundry thoughts:

I have not ran a PR in a marathon since Sept. '01. Could be because of injuries incurred in 2002, my age (47 years old) or a combination of both. Don't know, really. Seems like I am in this phase where I'm having a heck of a time breaking 3:30 again (which is my BQ). I'm sure I will do it in the Fall, but until then I guess I just need to be happy with my mediocrity. I don't believe all of us would still run marathons if we were not improving to the point of PRing, so I feel fortunate that I still have the drive, desire and passion for the distance.

I'm grateful for finishing my 17th marathon without injury. (I promised my wife that I would not be in a wheelchair next weekend when we travel to Germany and Italy. She said she would strongly resent having to push me around!)
