Tens Of Thousands Jam Downtown For Marathon
They hit the streets of downtown for
the Go! St. Louis Marathon and half marathon. With temperatures in the 50s,
runners enjoyed perfect weather.
Participants came from eight countries and 46 states.
The winner of the half marathon is Matthew Chesang, 26, of Olathe, Kansas.
Chesang is also the winner of last year's half marathon. He beat his time
last year by 16 seconds.
The winner of the full marathon is Karl
Gilpin, 29, of Russellville, MO which is near Jefferson City. Gilpin ran
26.2 miles in 2 hours, 24 minutes and 51 seconds. Gilpin is also the winner
of last year's full marathon.
If you think running the marathon is hard enough, imagine what it's like to
do it without shoes.
"Barefoot Rick" as he calls himself, does it to
benefit an organization that provides affordable wheelchairs for third world
countries. He said, "I've been doing this for 5 years. I run 50 miles a week
barefoot. I can run in snow. I can run in 10 degrees. Below that I take a
chance of getting frostbite."
