Barefoot Rick's Trolley Run 4 Miler Report - April 30, 2006

From the Trolley Run website at www.sportkc.org/events/trolleyrun.htm:
The Trolley Run is the largest 4-mile race in the United States and has a reputation for its fast, flat-to-downhill course. The Trolley Run holds the female and male 4-mile American Best Times, making it the fastest course in the U.S.!

What a gorgeous day in KC for the 17th annual Trolley Run 4 Miler! This is the largest 4 mile race in the country and the first time I have ever ran it! (Maybe it has been too close to the Boston Marathon and I have been recovering in past years?) Anyway, rain had inundated the area most of the weekend, but there was a bit of a reprieve on Sunday morning for the 7:45 a.m. start with only wet streets and temps in the low 50s.

I arrived on the Plaza about 6:45 a.m. and got in line for the shuttles to Waldo and the start area (75th and Wornall). Got to see and talk to many friends and made some new friends while waiting in line. We got to the start line with a half an hour to spare.

Stepping off the shuttle!

Taking this pic from the "Red" first wave back at the "blue" second wave of runners!

Waiting for the race to start!

The race started promptly at 7:45. I was in the first wave of runners, but I positioned myself toward the back of the first wave so I wouldn't get trampled by the speedsters! There were still plenty of puddles from the heavy rains of the night before, so I had lots of fun splashing! (Note: I made sure no one was around me when splashing, or I warned others of my intentions so they could steer clear in plenty of time.)

Here are my race stats (A NEW 4 MILE BAREFOOT PERSONAL BEST ... WOO HOO!):
Finish Time: 27:44
Pace: 6:56
Age Group Place (50-54): 15th
Overall Place: 405th out of 7,000(?)
